Time: 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM EST
Event Description:
In connection with the region-wide celebration of Anthracite Heritage Month, the Luzerne County Historical Society will present a one-man show, “An Evening with Johnny Mitchell,” on Thursday, January 11, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. at the Wyoming Presbyterian Church Institute, 40 Institute Street, Wyoming, PA 18644. Join playwright Robert Hughes as he conducts an interview with the legendary head of the United Mine Workers, Mr. John Mitchell, arguably the most influential anthracite labor leader. One of the founding members of the United Mine Workers in 1890, Mitchell served as treasurer before a twenty-year term as President, which started in 1898. During these years, he led numerous labor disputes, including the famous 1902 “Great Strike” and won many concessions from mine owners. Mitchell was a respected labor leader with many friends, including Teddy Roosevelt. Mitchell died in 1919. Modeled on the famous Frost/Nixon interviews, “An Evening with Johnny Mitchell” offers a never-before-seen view of this great man, in a fun and unique style that will appeal to both history buffs and theater fans. This is a free event; coffee and doughnuts will be available. For questions, or to make advance reservations, call 570-823-6244 ext. 3 or email reservations@luzernehistory.org. The Wyoming Presbyterian Church Institute is located just off of Wyoming Avenue in Wyoming, PA.
