Name: Festive Traditions 2017
Date: December 2, 2017 - December 3, 2017
Event Description:
The Luzerne County Historical Society will present its Festive Traditions program at the Denison and Swetland Houses on Saturday and Sunday, December 2 and 3, 2017, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Travel through centuries of celebrations: an early American wedding at the Denison House and an exploration of how Christmas traditions evolved at the Swetland Homestead. At the Denison House, 35 Denison Street, Forty Fort, PA, join us to celebrate a Denison House Wedding as young Denison family members enter into marriage. Visitors will learn about early-1800s wedding preparations, including needlework, gift giving and festive foods, before bearing witness to a period marriage ceremony. Celebrating Christmas with the Swetlands at the Swetland Homestead, 885 Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, PA, will take visitors on a trip through time as they learn how the holiday customs that we love today developed during the 1800s in the Wyoming Valley. Swetland family members from the past will talk about how they celebrate Christmas – or don’t. The tour will include period hearth cooking demonstrations in the Swetland Homestead summer kitchen. Combination tickets for both houses are $15 for LCHS members, $20 for non-members and $10 for kids 5-17. Tickets for one house are $8 for members, $12 for non-members and $5 for kids 5-17. To purchase tickets in advance or to become a member, call 570-823-6244 ext. 3 or email reservations@luzernehistory.org. No reservations are needed, tickets can be purchased at the door. Combination tickets are good for one admission to both houses on either day (or for one house on each day). Founded in 1858, the Luzerne County Historical Society is Pennsylvania’s oldest county historical society. LCHS preserves and promotes the collective history and heritage of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, at the Bishop Library and the Museum in Wilkes-Barre, the Denison House in Forty Fort and the Swetland Homestead in Wyoming.
