|
Summary
of Findings

All

as either good or excellent. Many of the companies interviewed
stated that their local operation compared favorably with
operations in other locations in terms of profitability
and productivity.
|
| Availability
of Skilled Workers |
While
the most common complaint throughout the nation relates
to the shortage of skilled workers, 88% of the employers
interviewed rated the availability of skilled workers
as either fair or good.
|
| Availability
of Unskilled Workers |
Over
80% of the companies rated the availability of unskilled
workers as either good or excellent.
|
| Educational
Competencies |
Over
75% of companies rated employees' reading and writing
skills as either good or excellent and over 65% rated
their calculations competencies as either good or excellent.
|
| Worker
Attitudes |
90%
of companies reported that worker attitudes are either
good or excellent. Furthermore, they reported that turnover
and drug incidence is low, and absenteeism and tardiness
are manageable.
|
| The
analysis is based upon interviews conducted by PFResources,
site selection consultants, with senior management and
human relations professionals from local companies in
each of the counties in the survey area (Carbon, Columbia,
Lackawanna, Luzerne, Monroe, Pike, Schuylkill, Wayne and
Wyoming Counties). Each of these companies operates in
the industrial, commercial, or service sector, and the
interview sampling was sufficiently large to make valid
workforce judgments. The interviews and these findings
are part of the report, Verification of the Northeastern
Pennsylvania Workforce, from November 1999. |
