GEISINGER CARDIAC CARE EARNS HIGH RANKING IN STATE REPORT

-- (06/12/2002) Wilkes-Barre, PA -- Geisinger Medical Center has been ranked among the top hospitals in the state for heart bypass surgery by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council. Their report found that the surgeons at Geisinger have extensive experience with each performing an average of 209 open-heart surgeries a year. The report also shows better patient outcomes and that Geisinger was found to deliver cost effective care. Also, the report found that patients treated by surgeons with higher volumes had shorter stays in the hospital. Geisinger's lenth of stay in the hospital is shorter at 4.7 days compared with the state average of 5.8 days.
