WILKES-BARRE, PA, 6/10/2020 – In partnership with BellXcel and the Bear Creek Community Charter School, the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA is proud to offer for the fourth year Power Scholars Academy™ (PSA) for elementary students from rising Kindergarten through 5th grades. The program’s goal is to increase students’ academic success and boost self-confidence.
In 2020, a new partnership with the Bear Creek Community Charter School will provide a full day of free summer learning and fun in a beautiful outdoor environment to local elementary students. Buses will leave from central locations in the City of Wilkes-Barre and Hanover Township for students that need transportation. Pennsylvania Department of Health guidance for camps and childcare facilities will be followed to ensure the safety of youth and their families during the program’s duration.
Studies show that during the summer, children from low-income environments can experience significant summer learning loss. Coronavirus-related school closures are extending the summer break by months, with under-resourced schools and low-income students finding learning at home more challenging, facing more crowded space, and competition for - or lack of - access to internet and technology.
Power Scholars Academy is a free six-week summer learning program designed to help advance students’ academic achievement through a full day of challenging math and reading instruction in the morning, afternoon enrichment activities and a healthy breakfast and lunch. PSA halts summer learning loss, helps students enter school in the fall ready to learn, and improves overall development, academic performance and graduation rates.
This summer, the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA will provide PSA to up to 156 local students. The program will begin on June 29th and will meet four days a week, Monday through Thursday, for six weeks. Enrollment for PSA is over half full. Wyoming Valley residents with eligible-aged children interested in attending should visit the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA’s website, www.wbymca.org, to download and complete an application by Thursday, June 18th.
