  • Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA Now Enrolling for the Free YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program: 8 Spaces Available

WILKES-BARRE, 9/4/2020 - The Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA will begin the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program - a free, evidence-based program- the week of September 28.   Call by September 20th to enroll; 8 spaces are available in the next class of 10-12 people.
Almost 1 in 3 adults in Luzerne County is pre-diabetic, but diabetes is preventable with small, sustained lifestyle changes.  The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program leads attendees to make those changes, providing social support, nutrition and physical activity recommendations and group accountability over the course of a year, for free.
The program has a record of success nationally and at the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA; 2019 participants all lost weight and increased physical activity, with 58 percent losing 7-9 percent of body weight (13-16 pounds for the average weight woman/man).
Preventing diabetes also prevents the many complications of diabetes, including heart disease, stroke, blindness, and lower limb amputations, and even death.  Diabetes Mellitus is one of the top ten causes of death in Luzerne County, with an estimated rate of 33.5 deaths per 100,000, compared to 21.5 in Pennsylvania as a whole (Pennsylvania County Health Profiles, July 2019).  That means that if Luzerne County were just like the rest of Pennsylvania, only about 65 people would die of diabetes, versus over 100 each year.  Diabetes also increases the risks of hospitalization and death if infected with COVID-19.
The program meets 25 times over the course of a year and is led by a trained life-style coach. Participants will meet at the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA, in a small group setting of 10-12 participants, with appropriate social-distancing and masking. If necessary, the class will be offered remotely. If the program is switched to a remote format and help is needed with the adjustment, Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA volunteers will assist enrollees in using devices to meet remotely.
To enroll in the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, contact Linda Reilly, Chronic Disease Prevention Director, or email linda.reilly@wbymca.org.
The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program is specifically targeted for pre-diabetics, not people with diagnosed diabetes. Take the test at doihaveprediabetes.org to see if you are likely to be one of the estimated 1 in 3 adults who are pre-diabetic.
