The 37th Annual Bernie’s Memorial 3-Mile Walk/Run benefits the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA
WILKES-BARRE, 06/04/2020 — On July 3rd, 4th, and 5th, the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA will host the 37th Annual Bernie’s Memorial 3-Mile Run/Walk virtually for the first time since its inception. Proceeds benefit the Y, a place we believe everyone deserves to be part of, regardless of their ability to pay. At the Y, our doors are open to all. Our financial aid program ensures that promise.
Since 1984, Bernie's Run has remained a valued tradition celebrating our nation's birthday. The race is held is held in memory of Bernie Hargadon, a past YMCA director. Bernie's dream was to create an achievable race for everyone. In 1984, he did it and thousands of runners and walkers have achieved Bernie's dream since.
Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the 3-mile run/walk will be a virtual race this year. Participants are welcomed and encouraged to find new and exciting routes to challenge themselves when participating in Bernie's Run. Wilkes-Barre City streets will not be used for this event. Those looking to stay close to the course and remain relatively flat are welcome to use Kirby Park.
“We are excited to have the opportunity to continue this valued tradition,” said Lauranel Banks, Wellness Director, Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA. “Although it will ‘look’ different, these circumstances have provided us the chance to embrace the history and meaning of Bernie’s Run - an achievable 3 miles for everyone. Understanding we serve everyone in the community, we are thrilled to be able to offer our race for those wishing to compete and those wishing to finish. Everyone will be able to find their level of achievement this year and celebrate their success as a runner, walker or child.”
2020 holds three new overall awards: Fastest runner, most elevation gain and the route that is furthest away from the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA. This year, there are also five new race categories based on elevation gain, not age, and will recognize the top two males and females in each category for both the run and the walk.
