  • WILKES-BARRE FAMILY YMCA RECEIVES GRANT FROM THE WILLIAM J. & CONSTANCE K. UMPHRED FUND

WILKES-BARRE, PA, 09/10/2020 — As the Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA gears up for its upcoming golf tournament, The William J. & Constance K. Umphred Fund of the Luzerne Foundation stepped in to offer support. The YMCA’s John A. McCole & Connie Umphred Charity Golf Classic is held annually to raise funds to send deserving children from our community to camp at YMCA Camp Kresge. The event is set to take place this Monday, September 14 th at Fox Hill Country Club. “

The Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA has served our community for 157 years, during which we have made it through many challenging times together, none perhaps as impactful for our community as this COVID crisis,” said Jim Thomas, Executive Director, Wilkes-Barre Family YMCA. “We were unsure if the golf event could take place this year considering the circumstances, but with safety measures and social distancing in place we are thrilled to be able to gather support for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility."

This year’s event celebrates the 26th year of providing camperships to youth and families in our community. All proceeds support sending campers to YMCA Camp Kresge, providing them with an unforgettable camp experience. In 2019 Camp Kresge was able to serve 891 children, helping them to build new skills, develop confidence, and make memories that last a lifetime. Even in the wake of the pandemic, YMCA Camp Kresge was able to offer day camp services this year and provide an outdoor educational experience for children who may not have otherwise had that opportunity.

“Our Y is here to bring people together, to improve their lives, nurture their families and strengthen their community,” said Thomas. “We are so incredibly grateful to Charlie Umphred and the William J. & Constance K. Umphred Fund for continuing to offer support throughout these challenging times. Standing together, we can truly strengthen the community- now and in the future.”

If you would like to help send a child to YMCA day or resident camp, you can donate to the 2020 Campership Campaign online at https://wbymca.org/give/#/donate/
